Protesters dressed as clowns stage event at Army recruiting post

By Fred Dodsworth
Knight Ridder

The Clown Army tried to join the real army and the soldiers weren't happy.

Two dozen protesters in clown costumes descended upon the Oakland Army Recruiting Center on Broadway on Thursday shouting that they wanted to join the service so they could use military equipment to bring fun to Iraq. Inside the recruiting office about six protesters disrupted recruiting efforts with chants and clown activities.

Jacob Crawford, a member of Berkeley CopWatch, documented the action until his video camera was wrenched out of his hand and broken by a soldier. He said the camera cost him $1,000 and he intends to file a claim for damages.

The soldiers called the police and the protesters were told to evacuate the army's office at approximately 2:30 p.m. or face arrest for trespassing, said Oakland police Sgt. Johnny Davis.

The protest continued outside on the sidewalk, eliciting honks from passing cars while police officers in three squad cars observed the activities from a distance.

``We will facilitate their First Amendment free speech rights,'' Davis said. ``They are allowed to protest as long as they are not within the commercial space and as long as they don't block the entrance.''

The recruiting station's doors were closed and locked after the clowns moved to the sidewalk.

``Yesterday we saw an ad on TV for the army,'' said a young woman in face paint and a clown costume who identified herself as Pvt. Dinosaur from Oakland. ``We want to join the army of fun so we can fly the big helicopters and drop candy on all the children of Iraq.''

The Clown Army began three years ago in England and came to the Bay Area three months ago, said a clown who identified himself as Maj. Mischief.

foreign nationals and citizens alike. On the word of the President,
anyone may be declared an enemy combatant and disappeared. The Bush
➢	Prepare the leather.
➢	Mold leather into the clown nose
➢	Fit the clown nose
➢	Cut the clown nose
➢	Paint and finish the clown nose
➢	Prepare and fit the elastic and string.

so this idea of clowning and street performing as a social movement really gets me going. I wonder what the possibilies are. is this where the revolution will start? Does this most basic form of media have the potential to be the spark that lights the way to change?
What kind of messages do you advocate for? What kind of change have you seen or heard about that might have been a result of a street show?
How do your personal political or social ideals come through in your show? Do you think your show (or a show like yours) would lead people to change something about their lives? or about their society in general?

So I have teamed up with a a few performers I have toured with before and a few new faces to bring to life a grand journey this next summer. Members of the SPAZ circus- Circo Mutante and others are in the midst of putting together a circus project with the intention of touring this comming summer. Right now there are 4 people in a "planning committee" of sorts, and our vision is less than 10 people in a show that infuses the best of sideshow acts, traditional circus skills, fire performance, theatrical activism, street performance, heavy on the musical tip, vaudeville influenced variety show with a merch table of art, zines, screenprinted patches and clothes, and circus gear like fire and juggling equip. As things get more solid we're going to get together a website, record a cd, and have some good photos maybe video clips on the site. We are looking for a few extra circus folk who are interested in working together. Optimally a good addition would be someone with as many facets to there performance ability as possible (i.e. juggler, musician of some type-or willing to ring a cowbell or kazoo from time to time- clown, aerial artist, sideshow acts, acrobat) in addition to interest in prop and costume making, set design, promotional materials, organisational skills and what not. We have guitars, clarinet, trumpet, harmonica, banjo, possibly a homemade calliope piano if not we would like a good accordian player, and we're hoping for a stand up bass, saw, washboard or any other obscure instruments. I am going to do fire performance, stilt walking/dancing, and a few random sideshow spectacles, random clownin and music. This is a collaberative effort and its what we each make it and it may take many different shapes and we are in the process of designing the "show". We are going to put on a circus show as part of a benefit at our warehouse in forest grove- The Nightmare Collective- and if there are any performers who would be interested in collaberating in that show contact me directly and we can see if we click and chat about ideas for a continuing things together. We are practicing and making props out here as we speak- we all live together and talk circus everyday. We have a veggie powered tour bus and intend on hitting destinations like festivals, clubs, bars, community art centers, and a lot of street performance in between and crossing paths with other fellow circus folks and cool bands booking shows together and culminating at Mutant Fest 2006 in August. We will definately be all up and down the west coast with connections in Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Eugene, Northern Cali, Bay Area, Santa Cruz, Monteray, L.A. and further inland perhaps places like Tahoe, Reno, SLC, Boise, Missoula. Depending on route and how far we want to travel we could hit up old connections from last summer in Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Lawrence Kansas, Milwaukee, and Madison Wisconsin. The idea is to have a main show, but a formula that can be rearranged and broken up/improvised to accomadate the setting (i.e. street performing to full length theater show) There are some random photos of last summers tour in my photo gallery, as well as the spaz.org "on the road gallery" if your curious. So the first step is to collaberate on shows in portland and the Pacific Northwest area and spend the next 4 months getting ready to hit the road! Also if you would just like to just help us make props and crazy costume stuff but not go on tour we would love the slave labor:)

Hey all, let's initiate critical mass hula hooping during the major protest against the war during summit meetings of the IMF/World Bank in DC on September 24th!! I don't think I need to tell you why this would be such a relevant and powerful statement....

Lots of people are meeting at the Washington Memorial at 11am on that Saturday for a massive march and concert. Perhaps we could meet up in this area. There are other protests/happenings happening all over the city Sept. 23-26th. Here's a website with lots of info.: www.septemberaction.org
and
dc.indymedia.org
is a good source of alternative media coverage and event info.

Please make suggestions for how to organize this (it seems like if we have a place and time to meet, and individuals have affinity groups/friends/family (plan ahead for problems that may be encountered) to look out for each other, this can be pretty simple to organize)!! My thought is since many of us know how to make our own hoops, not only can we bring our own hoops, but we can make some to bring along and pass out (It ends up costing me roughly $17 to make 10 basic hoops). Maybe if you don't know how to make hoops, you could donate the cost of supplies to someone who does...

I realize this is somewhat last minute, but let's start talking and get this happening!!!

These days I occasionally do a show called, "Life as a Person of Many Colors: One Clown's Story" and teach conflict resolution skills through theater to middle/high school students (when I can get funding).

I LOVE the story about the Israel Circus School I just read it and sent them an email.

I'd also love to hear what you are all up to, and meet you when I'm in the Bay Area again. (Or when you visit Colorado.)
